Schmidt studied at Independence Community College, earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kansas in 1990, a Master of Arts from the University of Leicester in 1993, and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1996. Schmidt served in the Kansas Senate from 2001 to 2011 and as Kansas attorney general from 2011 to 2023.
