A University of Houston poll found Ken Paxton and John Cornyn statistically tied in Texas’ Republican Senate primary runoff, with Paxton at 48% and Cornyn at 45%. The survey also measured several other Texas Republican runoff contests.
The University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs poll showed Ken Paxton leading John Cornyn 48% to 45% among likely Republican runoff voters, with 7% undecided and a margin of error just under 3%. Mark Jones, a coauthor of the survey, said Wesley Hunt voters leaned toward Paxton. The poll also showed differences between Paxton and Cornyn supporters by education, age, and voters’ leading policy concerns.
Jones said the favorable and unfavorable ratings for the two candidates could make party unity difficult before the general election, and described possible ways some Republican voters might respond. The survey also found state Sen. Mayes Middleton leading U.S. Rep. Chip Roy in the state attorney general’s race, and incumbent Texas Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright leading Bo French, with many voters undecided.
