Richard Blumenthal has represented Connecticut in the U.S. Senate since 2011. Ranking member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee; ranking member of the Senate Subcommittee on Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
An attorney, Blumenthal served as U.S. attorney for Connecticut from 1977 to 1981 and as Connecticut attorney general from 1991 to 2010.
Blumenthal earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in 1967, studied at Cambridge in 1968, and received a law degree from Yale Law School in 1973. Blumenthal served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1970 to 1976, then worked as an assistant and law clerk before becoming U.S. attorney for Connecticut from 1977 to 1981. After private legal practice, Blumenthal served in the Connecticut State Senate from 1987 to 1990 and as state attorney general from 1991 to 2010.
