A lawyer, Hassan served in the New Hampshire Senate from 2005 to 2010 and as governor of New Hampshire from 2013 to 2017.
Hassan earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University in 1980 and a law degree from Northeastern University School of Law in 1985. After law school, Hassan worked at Palmer & Dodge and later as associate general counsel for Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After an unsuccessful run for the New Hampshire Senate in 2002, Hassan won election in 2004, served in the state senate from 2005 to 2010, and became majority leader in 2008.
