Joni Ernst has represented Iowa in the U.S. Senate since 2015. Not seeking re-election in 2026.
Before entering the U.S. Senate, Ernst was Montgomery County auditor from 2005 to 2011 and served in the Iowa State Senate from 2011 to 2014. Ernst served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1993 to 2015 and retired as a lieutenant colonel.
Ernst earned a Bachelor of Arts from Iowa State University in 1992 and a Master in Public Administration from Columbus State University in 1995. After graduating from Iowa State University, Ernst joined the U.S. Army Reserve and served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1993 to 2015, including command assignments in Kuwait and at Camp Dodge. Ernst was Montgomery County auditor from 2005 to 2011, then served in the Iowa State Senate from 2011 to 2014.
