An epidemiologist and physician, El-Sayed led Detroit’s health department from 2015 to 2017 and Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services from 2023 to 2025.
El-Sayed earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in 2007, a doctorate from Oriel College in 2011, and a medical degree from Columbia University in 2014. El-Sayed later taught epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and directed Detroit’s health department from 2015 to 2017.
