Rep. Blake Moore said Elise Stefanik’s public criticism of Speaker Mike Johnson surprised him and did not reflect broad Republican opposition. Stefanik disputed Moore’s assessment, while Johnson said he was not worried about his standing.
Moore, the vice chairman of the House Republican conference, said Stefanik’s public criticism of Johnson had “blindsided” him and that he did not sense widespread discontent among House Republicans. Stefanik had accused Johnson of “getting rolled by Democrats” over a proposal she wanted included in the annual defense bill, which would require the FBI to notify Congress when it opened an investigation into a federal candidate.
Stefanik also said Johnson was an “ineffective leader” and that most Republicans would support new leadership. Moore rejected that view and praised Johnson’s handling of the dispute. Johnson said he was not worried about his standing, and Stefanik later said the two agreed Republicans should focus on delivering results.
