President Donald Trump pardoned Rep. Henry Cuellar and his wife in their federal bribery case. Cuellar thanked Trump and said he intends to run for reelection, while a House Ethics Committee investigation remains open.
Trump said he was pardoning Cuellar because he believed the Biden administration had targeted him for speaking out on immigration. Federal prosecutors had alleged that Cuellar and his wife accepted about $600,000 in bribes; a judge dismissed two of the 14 counts, and a trial had been set for 2026. Cuellar has maintained his innocence.
Cuellar thanked Trump, called the pardon a “clean slate,” and said he intends to run again. He filed for reelection to Texas’s 28th Congressional District. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called Cuellar a valued member of the Democratic caucus and said he expected him to remain in it.
