Enrique Casiano, a nurse and union activist, is running for the Democratic nomination in Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District. He says a health care workers’ strike helped motivate his campaign and that he wants to strengthen worker protections and change the health care system.
Casiano said his decision to run followed a four-month strike at Mercyhealth East Clinic in Janesville, where he is a leader in UAW Local 95. The strike ended when clinic management and the union ratified a contract; Casiano said it brought raises but also higher health care costs for employees. He said the experience persuaded him that federal labor laws need to change.
Casiano supports Medicare for All, stronger worker protections, and action against wage theft and worker misclassification. He is one of five Democrats seeking the chance to challenge Republican Rep. Bryan Steil. Casiano criticized Steil’s record and said he hopes to mobilize voters who have not participated in past elections.
