Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal are seeking answers about the whereabouts and handling of a diamond ring given to President Trump, raising questions about whether it was connected to a tariff exemption. The ring’s disposition and whether Trump accepted it remain unclear.
Warren and Blumenthal wrote to federal officials asking about a diamond ring the Antwerp World Diamond Centre gave to the U.S. ambassador to Belgium. The senators said they were unaware of public reporting about the ring’s location and questioned whether it was a gift to Trump or to the American people. The organization denied that the gift was connected to the exemption of European diamonds from tariffs; the ring was estimated to be worth close to $30,000.
The senators cited a White House statement that the ring had not been presented to Trump and described federal procedures for screening and cataloging gifts. Their letter said the circumstances and lack of clarity raised questions about whether the ring was accepted as part of a quid pro quo agreement. The article also characterizes Trump’s handling of gifts as ethically questionable and his transparency as lacking.
