The House failed to override President Donald Trump’s vetoes of two Republican-backed bills, including Lauren Boebert’s Colorado water project bill. Dozens of Republicans joined Democrats in voting to override, but neither measure reached the required two-thirds majority.
The House voted 248 to 177 to override Trump’s veto of the Colorado water infrastructure bill sponsored by Boebert, and 236 to 188 to override his veto of a bill concerning Miccosukee Tribe lands in the Florida Everglades. Both efforts failed to reach the two-thirds majority required to override a veto. Democrats who voted supported both overrides, alongside 35 Republicans on the Colorado bill and 24 Republicans on the tribal lands bill.
Trump said Boebert’s bill would waste taxpayer dollars. Boebert said the veto could harm voters in her district and voiced concern that it might be political retaliation for her calls for accountability. A White House official said the votes did not indicate Republican disunity and argued that the overrides would not succeed.
