At a Democratic U.S. Senate primary debate, Joshua Turek and Zach Wahls disputed their records on reproductive healthcare and how to advance abortion-rights policies. Both said they would support codifying Roe v. Wade, but disagreed over whether working across party lines could achieve that goal.
At Thursday’s debate, Wahls criticized Turek for missing votes on Iowa measures related to abortion and reproductive healthcare, and for supporting a bill in committee that included funding for crisis pregnancy centers. Turek said he missed votes because of health issues or previously scheduled advocacy work, and said he supported the committee bill because it included maternal-healthcare fellowships. Wahls said he would push to defund the centers; Turek said he voted against a later increase in funding for the program.
Both candidates said they would support codifying Roe v. Wade if elected. Turek argued that his experience working in a Republican-controlled state legislature could help him advance legislation across party lines; Wahls said reproductive rights were not an area for compromise with Republicans. They are competing in the June 2 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat.
