Rep. Julia Letlow entered the Republican primary for Sen. Bill Cassidy’s Louisiana seat with President Donald Trump’s backing. Cassidy responded by defending his record and saying he expects to win the primary.
Letlow announced her Senate candidacy on Tuesday and criticized the prospect of a senator whose votes might change “when the pressure’s on.” President Trump had said he would give her his “complete and total endorsement” if she ran. Cassidy responded with a press call, defended his record and said he believed he would win the GOP primary.
Political analyst Robert Collins said Cassidy had supported Trump and his nominees in hopes of receiving an endorsement, but that Trump had not forgiven Cassidy for his vote in Trump’s impeachment trial. Collins also said Trump’s endorsement of Letlow bypassed Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming. Fleming’s campaign said it had volunteers, yard signs and campaign appearances, and claimed polls showed support for him.
