Rep. Julia Letlow announced she is running against Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana, with President Donald Trump’s endorsement adding to the race’s focus on Cassidy’s past impeachment vote. Cassidy said he expects to win reelection, while an analyst said it remains to be seen how other candidates will respond.
Letlow announced her Senate campaign at a breakfast event on Jan. 20 and later shared a campaign video. She said she was worried about what kind of country children would inherit and described herself as having fought alongside Trump. Trump had endorsed her, and Letlow’s remarks were interpreted by some as a criticism of Cassidy’s vote to convict Trump in 2021.
Political scientist Albert Samuels said Trump’s feud with Cassidy is central to the race and that Cassidy has been trying to walk back his 2021 vote. Cassidy said Letlow called him before announcing and said he would continue doing a good job if reelected. Samuels said the other candidates’ next steps remain uncertain; Letlow plans to leave her House seat to campaign, and the qualifying period is Feb. 11–13, ahead of the May 16 primary.
