Julia Letlow announced she is running for the Senate, challenging incumbent Bill Cassidy. President Donald Trump had previously backed her, while Cassidy said he would seek re-election.
Letlow announced her Senate bid at a business breakfast in Baton Rouge on Jan. 20. The race also includes state Sen. Blake Miguez, state Treasurer John Fleming and St. Tammany Parish Councilwoman Kathy Seiden. Louisiana’s party primary is scheduled for May 16, with the general election set for Nov. 3.
Trump had previously said he supported Letlow if she ran. Cassidy said Letlow called him to share her decision and that he would continue doing a good job when he wins re-election. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said Republican infighting could put the party’s Senate majority at risk.
