An Emerson College poll found James Talarico leading Jasmine Crockett by 9 points in the Texas Democratic Senate primary, while Ken Paxton and John Cornyn were nearly tied in the Republican race. The poll also found close general-election matchups and a decline in President Donald Trump's Texas approval rating.
The Emerson College survey put Talarico ahead of Crockett, 47% to 38%, among likely Democratic primary voters, with 15% undecided. That differed from a Texas Southern University poll about a month earlier, which had Crockett ahead by 8 points. Emerson found Talarico leading among Latino and white voters, while Crockett had 80% support among Black voters.
In the Republican Senate primary, Emerson found Paxton at 27%, Cornyn at 26% and Wesley Hunt at 16%; the article says the race could go to a runoff if no candidate reaches 50%. In hypothetical matchups, Cornyn and Hunt led Crockett, while Paxton was tied with either Democrat. The poll also found Trump's Texas approval rating at 48%, with 46% disapproving, compared with a 7-point net approval rating in August.
