Reps. Ilhan Omar and Pramila Jayapal co-hosted a congressional hearing in St. Paul on ICE actions in Minnesota. Witnesses described detentions and local officials criticized federal operations, while the White House blamed local leaders for hostility toward federal officers.
The Jan. 16 hearing, titled “Trump’s deadly assault on Minnesota,” was co-hosted by Omar and Jayapal as part of a series on the effects of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Omar said the enforcement activity amounted to federal overreach and political retribution. Attorney General Keith Ellison testified that Minnesota officials sued the Department of Homeland Security over what he called unjustified and unconstitutional activity.
Other testimony included accounts from two U.S. citizens detained by ICE. The article also reported that more federal agents were being sent to Minnesota, that Trump threatened to use the Insurrection Act, and that Gov. Tim Walz urged him to lower tensions. A White House statement blamed local officials and sanctuary policies for creating hostility toward federal officers.
