Tammy Duckworth has represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate since 2017, after serving in the House from 2013 to 2017.
An Army helicopter pilot and National Guard veteran, Duckworth directed the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs from 2006 to 2009 and held an assistant secretary post in the federal Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to 2011.
Duckworth studied at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and Northern Illinois University, and earned degrees from the University of Hawaiʻi System, the Elliott School of International Affairs and Capella University. Duckworth joined the Army Reserve in 1992 and served as a helicopter pilot in Iraq. After a 2004 helicopter attack caused the loss of both legs, Duckworth continued serving in the Illinois Army National Guard until retiring in 2014. Duckworth ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House in 2006, directed the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs from 2006 to 2009 and held an assistant secretary post in the federal Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to 2011.
