Christopher A. Coons has represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate since November 2010. Vice chair of the Senate Ethics Committee; ranking member of the Senate Subcommittee on Department of Defense.
Before entering the Senate, Coons served on the New Castle County Council from 2001 to 2005 and led the county as executive from 2005 to 2010.
Coons earned a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College in 1985 and graduate degrees from Yale Divinity School and Yale Law School in 1992. Coons studied at the University of Nairobi and worked as a relief volunteer in Kenya, then worked for the Coalition for the Homeless in New York and as a legal clerk. After returning to Delaware in 1996, Coons worked as in-house counsel for a manufacturing company and for nonprofit organizations. Coons served on the New Castle County Council from 2001 to 2005, including as council president, and was county executive from 2005 to 2010.
