Rep. Dan Newhouse announced he will not seek reelection next year, setting up an open-seat contest in Washington’s 4th Congressional District. Republican Jerrod Sessler and other candidates have already entered the race.
Newhouse, who was first elected to Congress in 2014, said the decision brought “only gratitude” for representing his home state. He is midway through his sixth term and previously drew attention for voting to impeach Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
Sessler, whom Trump endorsed in his 2024 challenge to Newhouse, said he is running with Trump’s endorsement and listed priorities including lowering living costs and supporting agriculture. Wesley Meier and John Duresky have also filed paperwork to run. Local Republican and Democratic Party chairs offered reactions to Newhouse’s announcement.
