President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Tano Tijerina against Rep. Henry Cuellar, weeks after pardoning Cuellar and his wife in a federal corruption case. Trump said Cuellar’s views were not strong enough to merit his support.
Trump announced his support for Tijerina in a Truth Social post, saying he had pardoned Cuellar after reading letters from Cuellar’s daughters. Trump said he had not expected Cuellar to run for office again as a Democrat and described his views as weaker than his own.
Cuellar and his wife had been indicted over alleged bribes from an Azerbaijan-owned energy company and a Mexican bank. The Justice Department said the payments were laundered through companies and alleged Cuellar agreed to use his office to influence U.S. foreign policy in Azerbaijan’s favor. Tijerina previously served three terms as Webb County judge after retiring from baseball.

5 OUTLETSOutlets agree that Trump pardoned Henry Cuellar and later endorsed Republican Tano Tijerina against him as Cuellar sought reelection. Left-leaning outlets frame Trump's criticism as a hostile response to Cuellar continuing his reelection bid after the pardon. Center outlets report the endorsement alongside Cuellar's continued campaign and his response that he made no deal for the pardon. Right-leaning outlets focus on Trump's rationale for backing Tijerina and, in Fox News's account, do not include a response from Cuellar.
