Sen. Tim Scott condemned President Donald Trump’s now-deleted post depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, calling it racist and urging Trump to remove it. Trump declined to apologize, while lawmakers from both parties and civil rights groups also criticized the post.
Scott said he hoped the post was fake and called it “the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House,” urging Trump to remove it. The video focused on unsubstantiated claims of fraud in the 2020 election before briefly showing a disparaging clip of the Obamas. The White House first defended the post, then said a staffer had posted it erroneously; Trump later said he had not made a mistake and declined to apologize.
Democratic leaders and several Republican lawmakers also condemned the post. Civil rights groups criticized it, and the National Urban League’s Marc Morial called for members of Congress to sign a resolution condemning the comments.
