Sen. John Kennedy said President Donald Trump's endorsement helped Julia Letlow lead Louisiana's GOP Senate primary, where incumbent Bill Cassidy finished third. Kennedy also pointed to voter confusion over the state's move to closed primaries as a factor in the result.
Kennedy said Trump's endorsement of Letlow helped shape the Louisiana Republican Senate primary, while noting that Cassidy had been politically vulnerable for more than a year. Letlow finished first, followed by John Fleming and Cassidy; Letlow and Fleming advanced to a runoff because neither received more than half the vote. The runoff winner will face the winner of the Democratic runoff in November.
Kennedy also said some voters were upset by Louisiana's shift from open to closed primaries and confused by the timing of congressional and Senate elections. After Cassidy's defeat, Trump celebrated the result on social media. Cassidy conceded and urged voters not to pout, whine or claim an election was stolen.

Right-leaning outlets emphasize Trump’s backing of Letlow as a political win and portray Cassidy’s defeat as a rebuke of his opposition to Trump.
