Analilia Mejia won New Jersey’s 11th District special election, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway 59.5% to 40%. The result sends Mejia to Congress for the remainder of the term and sets up another campaign for a full term.
Mejia won the April 16 special election with 77,620 votes to Hathaway’s 52,122, according to the Associated Press and CNN. The election filled the seat vacated by Mikie Sherrill, who resigned to run for governor. Mejia will serve the remaining eight months of Sherrill’s term and then must run for a full term.
The article describes the result as a signal of progressive strength while noting the district was heavily Democratic. Political analyst Amy Funck said the result may indicate effective mobilization by progressives, while also warning of divisions within the Democratic Party. Mejia said her first priority in Congress would be holding the administration accountable; Hathaway said he intended to keep working toward the seat.
