Nashville Democrat Diana Onyejiaka announced she is running for Tennessee’s U.S. Senate seat in 2026, becoming the first Democrat to enter the Aug. 6 primary. She outlined commitments including restoring Affordable Care Act tax credits and expanding support for caregivers.
Onyejiaka said she is running to represent Tennessee and described her goal as standing up for working Tennesseans. She is the first Democrat to announce a candidacy in the Aug. 6 primary; she previously sought the same seat in 2020 but did not appear on that year’s primary ballot. Sen. Bill Hagerty is seeking reelection, and independent Andrew Woodruff Mixon has filed candidacy papers.
Onyejiaka said she would assess Senate decisions by whether they strengthen families, protect freedom and improve government. Her stated commitments include restoring Affordable Care Act tax credits, modernizing postpartum care, supporting caregivers and dismantling what she called “oversized and over-centralized hospital systems.” She also said faith is central to her life and how she would serve.
