Milwaukee alder Peter Burgelis entered Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, saying he could bring the fundraising and national attention needed to challenge Rep. Bryan Steil. A union political group backing rival Mitchell Berman criticized the move.
Burgelis said he entered the race after reviewing the other Democrats’ fundraising and concluding none had enough money to mount a competitive challenge to Steil. He acknowledged that living outside the district could become an issue in campaign ads. Burgelis also criticized Steil’s votes, saying they had contributed to rising costs and cuts to assistance programs.
The UAW’s statewide political action council had endorsed Berman after evaluating the candidates. Council chair John Drew said Berman’s campaign and working-class background made him a strong candidate, and criticized the effort to recruit Burgelis as an attempt to install a candidate instead of supporting people from the district. Federal Election Commission reports through March 31 showed Berman had raised more than the other Democratic candidates mentioned, while Steil had more than $5.5 million on hand.
