Rep. Thomas Massie released an ad highlighting challenger Ed Gallrein’s past change in voter registration from Republican to independent. Gallrein’s campaign said he made the change out of frustration, while both candidates traded criticism as President Donald Trump backed Gallrein.
Massie’s March 10 ad said Gallrein changed his registration from Republican to independent in May 2016 and back to Republican in June 2021. The Courier Journal reported that registration records shared by Massie’s campaign supported those dates; its separate public-records request was still pending. Gallrein’s spokesperson said he briefly changed registration out of frustration with the political system in Massie’s district.
The candidates and their campaigns exchanged further criticism over their records and support for Trump. Trump reiterated his endorsement of Gallrein in a social media post, and Sen. Rand Paul publicly backed Massie. The ad was set to air around Trump’s planned March 11 appearance in Massie’s district.
