Tim Kaine defended Chuck Schumer amid calls for the Senate minority leader to step down over the government-shutdown funding vote. Kaine also told House Democrats to focus on choosing their own leadership.
Some House Democrats criticized Schumer’s leadership after eight Senate Democrats voted with Republicans for a spending bill that did not include the health care subsidies Democrats had sought. Schumer did not vote for the bill. Ro Khanna said Schumer lacked confidence and had been weak in fighting for health care; Schumer’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Kaine said he did not need Schumer’s permission to vote as he chose, cited Schumer’s legislative wins under the Biden administration, and said House Democrats should focus on their own leadership. Chris Murphy said Democrats needed hard conversations about how their caucus would operate and warned against continued division.
