A University of Houston poll found Ken Paxton and Jasmine Crockett leading their respective Texas Senate primaries, with Paxton short of a majority and likely headed for a Republican runoff. The poll also showed close hypothetical general-election matchups.
The University of Houston’s Hobby School poll surveyed likely voters online from Jan. 20 to 31. Among Republicans, 38% favored Paxton, 31% John Cornyn and 17% Wesley Hunt; 12% were undecided. Among Democrats, Crockett led James Talarico 47% to 39%, with 12% undecided. The article reports margins of error of plus or minus 4 points for the party primaries and 2.5 points statewide.
The poll showed close hypothetical general-election contests. Crockett’s campaign spokesman said the results challenged claims that Talarico was the more electable Democrat, while Hunt’s spokesman cited other surveys and said Hunt performed better against Democrats in one-on-one matchups. Cornyn’s spokesman said polls had varied and predicted the Republican contest would likely go to a runoff.
