President Donald Trump pardoned Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar and his wife, ending Cuellar’s federal bribery case. Cuellar also filed for reelection as a Democrat, setting up a campaign against Republican candidate Tano Tijerina.
Trump said the pardon was warranted because he believed the Biden administration had targeted Cuellar for speaking out about border policy. Cuellar and his wife had been indicted on bribery, conspiracy and money-laundering charges; the indictment alleged that Cuellar accepted bribes and then advanced policies benefiting Azerbaijani interests. Cuellar has maintained his innocence, and the pardon means he will no longer face legal consequences related to the case.
Cuellar filed for reelection as a Democrat on Wednesday. Tijerina, his Republican opponent, said he was running because of problems facing South Texas, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he agreed with the pardon but did not understand Trump’s motivation. Speaker Mike Johnson said the pardon would not affect Republicans’ efforts to hold the House.
