A previously unreported 2020 Reddit comment in which Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner called police officers “opportunistic cowards” has resurfaced during his campaign. Platner says some of his online comments were jokes taken out of context; a state lawmaker criticized his remarks, and Platner’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
A Maine Monitor archive of Platner’s since-deleted Reddit posts contains a June 2020 comment calling law enforcement “opportunistic cowards,” which the article says had not previously been reported. It also recounts other past remarks about police and says Platner has faced scrutiny over other online comments and personal matters.
State Rep. Donald Ardell criticized Platner’s remarks and questioned whether he had changed. Platner previously said some comments were jokes intended to bother people online and attributed some remarks to struggles with PTSD after overseas deployments. His campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
