Democrat Analilia Mejia defeated Republican Joe Hathaway in the special election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, leaving Republicans short of a chance to expand their narrow House majority. The campaign included disputes over Mejia’s views on Israel and Hathaway’s relationship with President Donald Trump.
Mejia, backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, won the special election after the race was called shortly after polls closed. She will serve the remaining eight months of the term vacated by Mikie Sherrill, and Republicans did not gain the seat as they sought to expand their fragile House majority.
During the campaign, Hathaway accused Mejia of being antisemitic over her criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Mejia said criticism of a government should not be conflated with antisemitism and pledged to protect Jewish constituents. Hathaway also described areas where he supported or opposed Trump’s policies, while Mejia argued that Hathaway supported policies of Trump and congressional Republicans.
