CBS News projected that former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated Rep. John Larson in the Democratic primary for a Hartford-area House seat. With just over half the vote counted, Bronin led by nearly 7,000 votes. Jillian Gilchrest and Ruth Fortune trailed the two front-runners. The campaign focused on whether Democrats should return the longtime incumbent to Congress or choose a newer, younger candidate.
Bronin campaigned on bringing “new energy, new ideas, and new perspectives” and called Larson a “status quo” candidate. Larson argued that his long tenure and record of delivering for constituents would give him greater influence in Congress. The article also noted endorsements for both candidates and reported that Bronin raised just over $3 million, compared with Larson’s $2.7 million. Bronin will face Republican nominee Amy Chai.
