Luke Bronin defeated longtime incumbent John Larson in the Democratic primary for Connecticut’s 1st District, winning 53.5% to Larson’s 34.7% with about 51% of votes counted. The result leaves Bronin heavily favored for the general election in the safely Democratic district.
The Associated Press called the four-way primary for Bronin on Tuesday night. Bronin’s campaign emphasized generational change and new leadership; in his victory speech, he called the result a “political earthquake in Connecticut.” Larson, who had served 28 years in Congress, conceded and said he had congratulated Bronin. He also said he intended to serve through the end of his term.
Jillian Gilchrest and Ruth Fortune shared about 11.8% of the vote, according to the AP. Bronin discussed affordability, renewable energy and artificial intelligence regulation, and the article described the race as part of a broader trend of younger candidates challenging longtime Democratic incumbents. Bronin is the heavy favorite in November, the article said, because the district is safely Democratic.
