Graham Platner won Maine’s Democratic Senate primary, setting up a general-election contest with Republican Sen. Susan Collins. The Associated Press reports that the campaign has centered on cost-of-living concerns as well as questions about Platner’s past conduct.
Platner won the Democratic nomination after campaigning on the high cost of living and a message of redemption. He said he wanted to earn voters’ trust and promised to oust Collins; he also attacked her over her support for wars and conservative Supreme Court nominees. Collins’ spokesperson defended her record, citing work on rural hospitals, shipbuilding, infrastructure and other issues.
The report recounts criticism of Platner over past online comments, a tattoo, sexually explicit messages and an allegation by a former girlfriend, which his campaign disputed. Platner apologized for the comments and said he was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression when he wrote them. Voters also chose nominees in Maine’s governor and 2nd Congressional District races, which went to ranked-choice tabulations because no candidate won a majority.
