Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico used their first Texas Democratic Senate debate to distinguish themselves on impeachment and ICE funding while largely aligning on taxes, health care and economic issues. The debate previewed themes for the March primary and November campaign.
At their first debate for the Texas Democratic Senate nomination, Jasmine Crockett said she would support impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump and an investigation into his use of tariffs. James Talarico said the administration had committed impeachable offenses but would weigh evidence fairly in a Senate trial. Both candidates supported impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem; Talarico called more specifically for taking funding from ICE and putting it into communities.
The candidates generally aligned on economic issues, health care and taxes. Both proposed ending tariffs; Talarico backed higher taxes on the wealthiest earners, while Crockett said she supported Medicare for all. The March 3 primary winner will face the winner of the Republican contest involving John Cornyn, Wesley Hunt and Ken Paxton.
