Elise Stefanik withdrew from New York’s governor’s race after Bruce Blakeman emerged as a primary opponent. Her former campaign manager said Stefanik wanted to avoid a costly, divisive Republican primary and also weighed time with her family.
Stefanik left the governor’s race Friday after Blakeman emerged as a primary opponent; President Donald Trump endorsed Blakeman the next day. Stefanik’s former campaign manager, Michael Kracker, said the campaign believed a primary would consume resources and time and divide Republicans before the general election.
Kracker said Stefanik and her family made the final decision, with family considerations also weighing heavily. He said the campaign would now look to unify Republicans behind a candidate who could bring resources to the race.
