The Bureau of Reclamation released $40 million that had been frozen for the Colorado River District’s planned purchase of Shoshone water rights. Rep. Jeff Hurd was credited with advocating for the release, while the purchase still awaits further contracting and water-court steps.
The $40 million award, originally part of Inflation Reduction Act drought funding, had been frozen for nearly 17 months. Its release brings the Colorado River District’s raised funds to $97 million of the $98.5 million needed to buy the Shoshone water rights from Xcel Energy. The district says the rights would help keep water in the Colorado River for environmental purposes.
District General Manager Andy Mueller credited Rep. Jeff Hurd with advocating for the funding, and Hurd said he had worked with federal officials and local water leaders to move it forward. The grant now enters a contracting phase, but a water court must make the final determination on the acquisition; the district will also need funding and state utility commission approval to complete the transaction.
