Colorado’s three Democratic members of Congress are seeking an independent investigation into ICE detentions and “death cards” found in vehicles in Eagle County. They asked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to identify the ICE office investigating the incident and respond by March 20.
Rep. Joe Neguse and Sens. John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet sent Noem a letter seeking disclosure of which ICE field office is investigating the cards and calling for an independent investigation. They cited allegations that agents posed as local law enforcement during January traffic stops that led to Latino residents being detained. The lawmakers’ letter also said cards were found in other Colorado counties.
Voces Unidas said relatives found the cards in abandoned vehicles and described the Ace of Spades as a tool used to intimidate people of color. ICE Denver public affairs said the agency condemned the conduct, while DHS said it was conducting an internal investigation. According to Neguse’s office, Noem’s response to an earlier letter did not provide the requested information; it said the matter had been assigned to an ICE office and that the agency would not comment on an ongoing investigation.
