A Senate appropriations bill passed without Sen. Michael Bennet’s amendment to block federal support for a road serving the Berlaimont Estates development near Edwards. Bennet voted against the bill, while the developers said they are continuing with the project.
Bennet introduced an amendment to the Senate Interior Appropriations Bill that would have barred federal funds from being used to open, improve, permit or build a year-round road on public land north of Edwards. The amendment was not included in the final bill, which passed the Senate 82-15; Bennet voted against it. His office said he was disappointed and remained committed to advancing the language.
The proposed road would serve Berlaimont Estates, a development of 19 luxury homes on private land surrounded by the White River National Forest. Residents have raised concerns about effects on forest habitat. A spokesperson for the developers said the Forest Service had approved the project’s record of decision and road permits, and argued that federal law required road authorization and that the developers reimbursed the agency’s costs.
