Rep. Mike Thompson is seeking a 15th House term in California’s redrawn 4th District, where Democratic challenger Eric Jones is mounting a serious challenge. A day of community visits and a town hall showed how Thompson is highlighting constituent work and criticizing President Trump’s policies.
Thompson, who has represented the district for 14 terms, is relying on his experience and local recognition as he campaigns in a district made less heavily Democratic by redistricting. Jones, a political newcomer, has roughly matched Thompson’s fundraising and contributed $365,000 of his own money. The primary is June 2, and the top two candidates advance to November’s runoff.
During a day of community events, Thompson highlighted federal support for local projects and discussed his American Affordability Act. At a town hall, he criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the war in Iran and opposed the SAVE Act, which he said was designed to protect Trump. Jones has argued on the campaign trail that Thompson represents a complicit old guard.
