Graham Platner said he would skip upcoming Democratic Senate primary debates to focus on his campaign against Susan Collins, after Janet Mills ended her campaign. It was unclear whether the scheduled debates would proceed.
Platner’s campaign confirmed that he would withdraw from all upcoming Democratic primary debates. He had been scheduled to debate Mills and David Costello in May, including at a May 7 forum hosted by NEWS CENTER Maine and Maine Public with the Portland Press Herald. Mills ended her campaign Thursday, and it was unclear whether the debates would go forward. Costello was expected at some debates but did not qualify for a May 18 forum because of his low poll numbers.
The article describes Collins as a vulnerable Republican incumbent and notes endorsements for both sides: Collins has backing from Republican leaders John Thune and Tim Scott, while Platner has endorsements from progressive organizations and Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. Platner also announced new Maine endorsements Thursday.
