President Donald Trump endorsed former Maine Gov. Paul LePage in the race for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. The endorsement comes as incumbent Jared Golden plans not to seek reelection and Republicans view the district as a pickup opportunity.
Trump announced his endorsement of LePage on social media, calling him a “WINNER” and saying he would be a “tremendous Congressman.” House Speaker Mike Johnson also endorsed LePage. LePage welcomed Trump’s support and said he looked forward to working with him on the economy, jobs, prices and crime.
The article describes the 2nd District as a Republican pickup opportunity and reports that Golden will not seek reelection. It also recounts LePage’s earlier effort to distance himself from Trump during his 2022 campaign for governor, as well as his state-funded stays at Trump’s hotel. Democrats seeking the seat include Matt Dunlap and Jordan Wood; Trump predicted Dunlap would win the primary while calling him a “Radical Left Democrat.”
