Sen. Susan Collins said large-scale ICE operations in Maine have ended after she urged Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to reconsider the agency’s approach. Federal agencies did not confirm a drawdown, and Maine officials and residents disputed federal accounts of the arrests.
Collins said there were no ongoing or planned large-scale ICE operations in Maine and that she had spoken with Noem. The Department of Homeland Security and ICE issued statements about enforcing the law and the operation, but neither addressed whether ICE was drawing down in Maine. Federal officials said about 50 arrests were made on the first day and roughly 1,400 people were operational targets.
Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline welcomed the scale-down and criticized the operation. Federal officials described some detainees as having serious criminal convictions, while court records showed that some had unresolved immigration cases or had not been convicted. Gov. Janet Mills called for information about detainees and criticized Collins; Collins has not called for Noem’s removal and has avoided criticizing ICE tactics beyond opposing the targeting of people in the U.S. legally. Graham Platner criticized Collins and Mills’ handling of ICE and demanded that the agency be dismantled.
