Former national security officials asked the Office of Special Counsel to investigate whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated federal ethics restrictions by speaking at a fundraiser supporting Rep. Zach Nunn’s reelection. The complaint also asks whether government resources were used for Hegseth’s trip to Iowa.
The Steady State, an organization of former national security and other officials, filed a complaint asking the Office of Special Counsel to investigate Hegseth’s August appearance at Nunn’s Iowa State Fair fundraiser. The complaint questions whether Hegseth used his position to influence an election, including by referring to the Defense Department’s budget request and his access to the President while urging support for Nunn. Hegseth said he was attending in a personal capacity.
The complaint also asks the office to examine whether government funds or resources were used for the trip. A news release about the complaint cited a Washington Post reporter’s post saying a Pentagon official described the trip as personal but that Hegseth used taxpayer-funded military aircraft. The Steady State said its complaint did not assert that reimbursement had not occurred. A Pentagon official said department staff were not involved in or privy to details of Hegseth’s personal-capacity events. Nunn’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment, while a spokesperson for his opponent, Sarah Trone Garriott, said Nunn should answer questions about the flight and the event.
