Sen. Susan Collins said large-scale ICE operations in Maine had ended after she urged Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to reconsider the enforcement approach. Collins said routine immigration enforcement would continue; Gov. Janet Mills had called for more information about arrests and detainees.
Collins announced that there were no ongoing or planned large-scale ICE operations in Maine, following several direct communications with Noem. She said ICE and Border Patrol would continue their normal operations. Federal officials said the operation, dubbed “Catch of the Day,” had resulted in more than 100 arrests, with about 1,400 people identified as operational targets.
Mills, who is running for Senate and could face Collins, had called for judicial warrants, arrest numbers and information about detainees, and urged Collins to act. Collins has avoided criticizing ICE tactics, while saying people legally in the country should not be targeted and advocating body cameras and de-escalation training for ICE personnel.
