A University of Houston poll found Ken Paxton leading John Cornyn in the Republican U.S. Senate primary and Jasmine Crockett leading James Talarico in the Democratic race. The poll marks a shift from recent surveys that showed both contests closer.
The University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs surveyed 550 likely voters in each party’s primary. Paxton led Cornyn 38% to 31%, while Crockett led Talarico 47% to 39%; 12% of respondents in each primary remained undecided. The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 4.18 percentage points.
The poll also found little difference between the expected general-election performance of the Republican and Democratic candidates in hypothetical matchups. In a separate survey of likely general-election voters, 49% approved and 50% disapproved of President Donald Trump’s performance, with respondents expressing differing views on his handling of several policy areas.
