TAP FOR WHYCredibility rates Raw Story, where this article appeared. The other scores rate the article itself.
The page credits a named reporter from the Daily Montanan, suggesting the reporting comes from an identifiable newsroom rather than anonymous or unsourced material. - Author attribution — Names Keila Szpaller and identifies the Daily Montanan.
- Source type — Published by an established national digital news outlet.
- Editorial standards — The story attributes campaign claims to the people making them, but offers limited independent verification.
- Transparency — The page identifies a reporting source, but provides little information about corrections or editorial processes.
The story gives a clear account of the filing and withdrawal and includes attributed statements from several political figures. Much of its detail about Alme comes from his announcement and endorsements, with limited independent scrutiny or opposing perspectives.
HOW WE SCORE ↗The story includes the candidates’ developments and an analyst’s changed race rating, but its account of Alme relies heavily on his own announcement and supportive endorsements. It provides little response or scrutiny from critics.
- Source diversity — Several endorsers are quoted, but independent and opposing voices are sparse.
- Counterarguments presented — No substantive criticism of Alme or the endorsements is included.
- Opinion vs reporting — The piece is presented as reporting and attributes political claims to their sources.

- Source selection — Most quoted political figures endorse Alme; the story also notes an analyst’s changed race rating.
- Framing — The framing centers on the race shake-up and endorsements rather than a partisan argument.

Montana Sen. Steve Daines withdrew from the 2026 Senate race and endorsed Kurt Alme, who filed on the day filing closed. The move reshapes the Republican race, while President Donald Trump and other Montana Republicans also endorsed Alme.
Kurt Alme filed as a Republican candidate for Montana’s 2026 Senate race on Wednesday, the day filing closed. Sen. Steve Daines then withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Alme. Alme also said he had endorsements from President Donald Trump, Sen. Tim Sheehy and Gov. Greg Gianforte.
Alme’s announcement highlighted his past service as Montana’s U.S. attorney and his law-enforcement work. Trump called him “exceptional” and said he would give him his “Complete and Total Endorsement”; Daines, Sheehy and Gianforte also praised his record. Seth Bodnar announced an independent candidacy, and other candidates filed as well. Analysts had considered the race safely Republican, though one moved it to “lean Republican” after Daines’s announcement.
