Ed Markey and Seth Moulton clashed in a Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary debate over an Epstein-related allegation, health records, transgender athletes and Medicare for All. PolitiFact examined several claims and found important context behind the candidates’ statements.
During the debate, Moulton questioned Markey about a meeting connected to a lobbyist whose email about the meeting was later forwarded to Jeffrey Epstein. Markey said he had never met Epstein. Justice Department files show Markey met with colleagues of lobbyist Bob Crowe in 2015, but the email does not show Markey knew Epstein was involved. PolitiFact also noted that being named in the files is not evidence of wrongdoing.
The candidates also discussed Moulton’s comments about transgender athletes, health records and Medicare for All. Moulton has cosponsored the Equality Act and voted against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act; he has called for Markey to release his health records. PolitiFact said health-record disclosure is not required of congressional candidates and found Markey was correct that Moulton does not share his support for Medicare for All. The Massachusetts primary is Sept. 1.
