Rep. Mike Lawler endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik for governor, backing her effort to challenge Gov. Kathy Hochul. Stefanik also criticized Hochul and mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, while Hochul denounced Lawler over Stefanik’s remarks about Mamdani.
Lawler, who had considered running for governor before deciding against it, endorsed Stefanik at a rally for Rockland County Republicans. Stefanik argued that New York is unaffordable under Hochul’s leadership, citing taxes, utility bills, energy prices and insurance prices. Lawler is running for reelection to his House seat.
The article also reports that Stefanik stood by calling Mamdani a “jihadist” and linked his agenda to Hochul, who had endorsed his campaign. Hochul called the remark Islamophobic and said Lawler was associated with people willing to be more extreme than President Donald Trump. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said he was continuing to explore a gubernatorial run.
